this is about centipedes. we don't want them. what i have to do is spread bug killer in the early spring, summer, and fall, and keep my drains closed all the time. even when i shower - drain closed; shower started; step in and wash; drain is opened before my last rinse, then shut after toweling off.

the bug killer is applied outside using the scott's wheelie spreader. i kept the original bag, cut it open, then re-filled it with bug-b-gone - same stuff @ 1/3 the cost. worked really well this year, but we had much less rain than last year.

i sleep with my bedroom lights on (after one summer when one-two bugs entered my bedroom every night for two weeks straight.). i have white walls there and want white walls everywhere now. my bed frame is metal and the headboard is 6 inches from the wall. i only do laundry in the daytime. the fuckers have me living in fear. in MY HOUSE!.

this is also about repairs and upkeep. my front room was trimmed with both quarter round and shoe moulding (the opposite of quarter round) and the stairs (over the basement) were also trimmed with shoe moulding. it looks like someone installed wall-to-wall carpeting that was later torn out without re-finishing the floors at the baseboards. my bedroom base moulding showed gaps and was caulked. i still have some inside work to do, then i'll patch and paint.

they're coming from outside, too, so my plan next year is to redo the trim on my siding at the base. it's called a water table. homes i look at during my walks have a second piece called a lookout. i will caulk the gap at the foundation before the trim is installed. my fieldstone basement will be repointed with a lime-based mortar. tough to get the temp right with that now, so the water table trim will be done first to cut down on drafts. i'm also thinking of white-washing the stones with lime, but that still has to be researched.

it'll be tough with little money, but i have to do this or my dentist will end up with money that should be going toward my home.karen.j.cosmehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10063147343773743865noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202299166901690059.post-14051063745163162852013-12-12T20:34:00.001-05:002013-12-12T21:03:03.391-05:00mary, mary.well, here we are at the end of 2013. so much has changed!

another panel of my fence came down while i was out one day, but it was all planned. sorta. i offered the shed in my yard to a neighbor and he had someone use a bobcat/forklift to move it. okay, i wasn't there to see it, but the tread marks and downed panel speak to a larger-than-my-patriot type of vehicle. anyway, i'm glad it's gone and really happy that it was put to good use versus my chopping it up for fire pit wood.

that was in october, then i transferred to a new job in november...on veteran's day. with my degree completed in august, i moved on to more interesting work and better pay, but i can still work per diem/extra at the old job because it's within the same department. kinda cool until you realize you're working all the frickin' time. i do this mostly for the improvements to my house, and one very much needed improvement is insulation.

i just checked out mass save home energy service programs and it looks like i can get the house insulated for next to nothing. nstar will cover $2000, the irs will credit $500, and the energy assessment is practically free (if you have knob and tube wiring, the cost of updating electric work is on you.). yes, winter is a week away, but letting the heat escape is wasteful. adding insulation means i'll be saving a few pennies and the house will feel cozy.

cozy is good.

now that the weather has improved, the current plan is to cherish the house. to do that, i have to finish my degree, then try to earn more money. fitness is required. ugh! i lose focus sometimes, but i will do this. you should see this yard, though. i am working on it. slowly by slowly. a battle, indeed. if the weather stays dry after wednesday then i'll clean/stain/treat the deck...that i don't like.

8pm. time to put away the laundry.

did i mention i'm going to start making hummus and olive tapenade? makes my mouth water just thinking about it.karen.j.cosmehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10063147343773743865noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202299166901690059.post-34422879465119262752011-12-10T13:03:00.001-05:002011-12-10T13:45:41.017-05:00smackdown!last night i attended a get-together with my high school classmates and we were one shy of a dozen. two guys were in from other parts of the planet and i hadn't seen one of them since...forever. the other, i think i don't know. since a few of us arrived unceremoniously late, we sat further away from the visitors' end and chatted amongst ourselves. yes, we inquired about the unknown visitor, but no one else offered any insight. as the meal ended, i was alone at the 'late' end, so i moved to the head of the visitors' end. and that's when things went skew-y.

this unknown visitor snubbed me in front of everyone else as i awkwardly introduced myself and attempted to strike up a conversation. a fifty year old, well-established male doing that 14-year-old thing. you know. the elbow on the table/back of the hand attached semi-permanently to the side of his face that was visible to me. was. the other two ladies had left for a smoke and i tried to participate in a conversation on a subject i clearly know nothing about - hunting. coup de grace arrived at the end: i casually put out my hand to shake and he hesitated. it left me numb. and i'm still trying to shake it off because i'm attending a party tomorrow with the people who saw this happen.

my classmate, gary, hooked me up to our high school's facebook page, so i've met a few folks and we've celebrated living/surviving. dining out, day trip, neighborhood clean-up, back yard meet-up. good times and plenty more to come.

and the hunt for a home of my very own begins anew since the listing agent for the last one i wanted (P&S completed and submitted to the bank in july) submitted another higher offer to the bank, and she informed us after the dirty deed was done. i'm only hoping irene will blow that house to bits. really.

september will be back to school for me. looks like a change in programs will have me graduating after one semester instead of three. i'm really excited about this finally getting done.

if i haven't stated it already, searching for a home of my own sometimes makes me weary. the looking is fun. okay. not always fun. sometimes scary. and sometimes very sad. but the offers that get declined. in this market, no less. great houses just sitting there. baffling.

i get home and have to set my alarm for 8am so i can take my son, who does not drive, to school because he forgot to purchase a monthly bus pass for may. i have a 1:30 appointment to look at another lovely house in a potential PCB area (someone bought the last one i wanted with cash!). i say "potential" because the EPA is skirting the area with more testing. a lot of time on my hands. already had coffee and breakfast so, what's left on the menu is laundry, haircut, walk, stop by mom's to celebrate my brother's birthday. most likely in that order, but mom's will have to wait until after a looky-loo at the house.

looks like a lovely day. let's go!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202299166901690059.post-6907619523273490962011-04-18T14:13:00.000-04:002011-04-18T14:13:23.456-04:00patriot's daymonday. did i mention that i love mondays...off! well, it's my holiday on. meaning i'm outie in one hour and gotta get ready for work, but i have to get my ikea bit in.

ikea is open on this massachusetts-only holiday (as it will be on easter sunday - yay!). so! for those of you who haven't experienced this hands-on swedish goodness in the us of a - get thee to an ikea.

did i mention that i'm an ikea-addict? it's been recommended that i approach ikea to submit myself as their southcoast spokesperson. yeah, it's that bad.

okay, bad setup and segue.

just go!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202299166901690059.post-47219830665013482972011-04-17T14:37:00.000-04:002011-04-17T14:37:13.322-04:00always look on the bright side of lifemy first jaunt via the new bedford council on aging's travel program. i should have had coffee. the day was overcast and blustery making it feel more like march weather. so happy i brought a cap.

first, we went to davenport's restaurant for lunch. this is in cumberland, rhode island. our host announced that we arrived early, but people were seated and served when we entered the restaurant. davenport's has party/large group rooms in the back and they're well lit. our discounted menu listed five offerings and i chose the roast beef on wheat bread with fries. simple, but very tasty. nice when things aren't complicated. but, i forgot to ask for coffee.

the activity for this day was the matinee showing of spamalot at ppac. the theater is ornate, but not gaudy. ppac's seating is just under comfy due to the narrow, yet plumpy seating. and their acoustic set-up makes the experience more homey. the audience was well mixed, so i didn't feel out of place in my extremely casual attire of sweater, pants, and sauconys.

not a review: i had enjoyed monty python's flying circus when it was aired years ago, but i really forgot most of that show as well as their quest for the holy grail. meaning that i wasn't sure what to expect because i had learned, after purchasing my ticket, that this show was a musical. it turned out to be a great show. no, i wasn't as enthusiastic as the rest of the audience (i'll use the excuse of not having coffee), but it was very nice for my initial theater experience (sorry, but i really don't remember any other at this time, so i have nothing to compare.).

looking forward to future adventures.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202299166901690059.post-41796315710439619742011-04-04T23:24:00.000-04:002011-04-04T23:24:41.026-04:00the waiting is over.the glasses i ordered for my son, eric, arrived today.

rehash: a blog that i highly recommend - glassyeyes.com - offers reviews and discount links to on-line optics shops. my son's first pair of basic glasses cost $48.90 at 39dollarglasses.com. that was a test-the-scrip purchase. the purchase experience was flawless. the glasses were perfect.

next was eyebuydirect.com offering bogof thru 3/14. eric wanted photochromic (uv-inherent), compact, anti-scratch, and anti-glare lenses on flexi-hinge frames. here are the frames eric decided on:

$104.10

$89.10

bad news: the offer was only for the frames, resulting in a savings of only $24.95.
good news: again, perfect. i was afraid the frames would be too small (as ordered), but they're actually larger. the lenses are also larger than expected. this is a good thing. after careful review, and taking eric's astigmatism scrip into account, the price at eyebuydirect was still the best buy even if we only ordered one pair.

the red frames look really good on eric and they very much resemble the ray-bans he wanted. grand total for all three glasses is $217.15, averaging near $72/pair. not bad at all.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202299166901690059.post-83855029856014080272011-03-24T12:42:00.002-04:002011-03-24T12:45:48.806-04:00waitingit's been over two weeks since i ordered my son's glasses and, since we're still waiting on a second order, i'll give a short review of the first order.

two words: good enough.

the glasses ordered from 39dollarglasses.com - NAPOLI 3536 - arrived in exactly 7 days (the 14th). the fit is fine, even though the frame was a bit smaller than expected and doesn't feature the desired flex hinges. the best thing was that the script was on point, even the PD. this order - frame, compact lenses for astigmatism, antiglare - came to just over 48USD with the glassyeyes.com link/discount.

of course, eric looks great in them, but he's very happy. that's why we took a chance and ordered photochromic/transitions® glasses on the 14th. from another vendor. so we're waiting.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202299166901690059.post-39332752016424911132011-03-07T17:34:00.001-05:002011-03-09T00:27:12.805-05:00oy!this year the march lion has boldly entered and, this past saturday, his roaring blew my cable out. i kid you not. this posting is courtesy of someone's open service. have to get a new modem for the nightmare that is comcast. DOCSIS cable modem standards must be met. 3.0, i believe, is the current demand.

friday was my son, eric's, eye appointment. we left with the Rx and forgot to get the PD (pupilary distance - aligns your eye movement with the curvature of the lens). eric calls on saturday and learns they charge an additional $25...only if you order glasses. off to bj's: PD measurements are not allowed unless you have an appointment to order glasses. we walk in to lenscrafters and - booyah! - free PD measurement right on <strike>the spot</strike> her tippy-toes. third time's the charm!

then eric got the ray-ban bug and fell in love with their best sellers:

RAY-BAN 5092 PRO

nice, but expensive as a package for our budget. it's now the goal for eyewear purchases. sad story there is that eyebuydirect.com sold out of the ~good~ frames very quickly, right at the beginning of their BOGOF sale.

NAPOLI 3536

for the moment, i've ordered from 39dollarglasses.com - basic frame and lenses just to make sure the Rx is right - $48.95. if it is, they'll be eric' s spare pair. my report in two weeks.

after all that, i had another chance to take pics of my house, then made an offer the next day. should hear back NLT 3/9. will post pics when they say, "YES! Of course you can have this house. It's yours!"

see you soon!

my son, eric, has an astigmatism (still not sure if article is required there) and he hasn't checked his vision for at least two years. he's always wanted photochromic lenses, so we'll try the online route versus spending over $300 at lenscrafters. he also wants a second pair and one of the listed retailers, eyebuydirect, has a BOGOF offer thru march 14th if you link thru this post's title. well, i looked there and at 39dollarglasses just to get an idea of what eric will have to cough up. i can already say that eyebuydirect is a go because, even without the BOGOF deal, the cost for what eric wants is almost half of something similar at 39dollarglasses. and he's tired of getting new nosepads, so he's looking at plastic frames. here are some i'll recommend to eric and hope he's not too picky. cute model.
"To be, or not to be, that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The Slings and Arrows of outrageous fortune;
Or to take Armes against a Sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them: To die, to sleep
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heartache, and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to? 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep
To sleep, perchance to dream; Aye, there's the rub,
For in that sleep of death, what dreams may come,
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause. There's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life:
For who would bear the Whips and Scorns of time,
The Oppressor's wrong, the proud man's Contumely,
The pangs of disprized love, the Lawes delay,
The insolence of Office, and the Spurns
That patient merit of th' unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? Who would there fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscovered Countrey from whose Bourne
No traveller returns, puzels the will
And makes us rather beare those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience doth make cowards of us all,
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o're with the pale cast of Thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment,
With this regard their currents turne away,
And lose the name of Action.—Soft you now,
The fair Ophelia? Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sinnes remembered."

i put in an offer and no bites. so says the listing agent. sorely disappointed. my gut says she didn't even bother submitting it. then i told my agent that i'd try laying low for a while. this so that i could finish studying for my real estate license. hey. i got my driving license at 42, so don't doubt me.

problem with this house is that it's just too perfectly perfect. yes. perfect for me. should this even be posted for all to see? well, i just can't help myself. look.

i mentioned on facebook that srta bus service is free for the next three months, starting today, but i'm happy to repeat it here. at worst, you now have a way to get to work. at best, just get out. no reason not to enjoy part of the south coast on srta's dime.

i'm still working, still eyeballing houses, still schooling, still tackling finances. still.

spring clean-out: much better, this time around. so much to give away/get rid of and feeling really great about that. this wednesday thru saturday i'll be hauling stuff to sally's. next wednesday i'll hit the ikea as-is area for re-organizing types of stuff. i have to simplify, and getting things in a more orderly set-up is key to accomplishing this. one thing i must stop is the negative thinking about my apartment and neighborhood. yeah, it's dive-y and dodgy, but fighting it takes more energy than working with it.

a co-worker of mine left her sunday standard times under the desk, between the pc tower and the recycle bin. work was really slow, so i pulled it and started reading it. i get to the last section and there's this ad for rockland trust bank...a black lady buys a home and the loan officer who helped her is standing behind her in the new-to-her living room. turns out to be one of those old-school ads where the loan officer's name is actually mentioned - steve borgerson. of course i looked him up. he's all over the place - linked in, facebook, et c. and, of course, i emailed him about my plight. he's the vice president, for crying out loud.

i'll let you know how it goes.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202299166901690059.post-67268846711851807862010-03-15T04:06:00.010-04:002010-03-31T01:25:16.936-04:00my queendom for a houseif i haven't already stated it, i would like to buy a house. well, i think i've found THE house. and guess what? i'm not ready. how sad is that? what's even worse is i'm already remodeling.

this oven bank needs to be installed:

of course, the kitchen will be updated with ikea *everything* because the wolf galaxy is just a bit beyond my orbit.

and this seating banquette would be perfect for a small cottage:

doesn't the floor look edible? like a chocolate fondant.

then i'll need to reno the bath for a walk-in shower, something like so:

i saw this bathroom as part of a home rehab for an elderly woman (including banquette and oven bank above). problem with this, for me, is that i want this floor tile in my kitchen. just can't decide if it's going on the counter or the backsplash. looks so honeylicious. bzzbzzbz.

i hope i can get the shingles to weather nicely like these nantucket homes. also leaning toward the clapboard front. choices, choices. but we must keep it simple.

hmm.

now where can i find some quahog shells for the driveway...?
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202299166901690059.post-34410700444679054712009-11-09T12:48:00.003-05:002009-11-09T13:57:29.973-05:00giving thanksi'm finally caught up on my homework. :shoutout: to prof k for patience and understanding. completion (of anything) can be such a stress reliever. like my car. one cause for the delay in homework production.

my front driver's side lights were out. this was made known to me when i decided to make an emergency drive to swansea. my son needed interview clothes and, being low on funds, we headed out to the salvation army family store at 6pm. store closes at 8pm. riding north on 18, we get to the union st lights and i'm noticing dimness on the front end. i exit onto elm st, check the lights. or non-lights. having to take route six = not cool. two shirts, a tie, and one pair of pants later (all laundered) , my son is gaining skills at his new job. so nice to have my couche-tard on a day schedule. now i get to tackle the car.

i own a MY02 hyundai elantra gt (XD). you know what? this is a hot car that gets no respect. i go to elantraxd for help. they're a great crew and they give lots of love and respect to all that is hyundai. and then some. found headlight replacement instructions in the 'diy' section. busted a knuckle. right index. still hasn't healed.

finally got the driver's side bulbs changed (woohoo!), and figured i'd change the passenger side so that the lights don't look wonky. my second attempt had me at auto zone on mt pleasant st. dusk was setting in and, after a squillion attempts at loosening the rear bolt, i left it for the next day. literally. i drove around for two days with a dysfunctional alarm system as well as a new vibration that i was not enjoying. elantraxd to the rescue: i left the low beam dust cap on the engine and that's why the hood wouldn't close properly (causing the two above issues). :shakeitoff:

next: the holidays. i'm a veteran and just so happen to have veteran's day off his year. makes for a weird work week. nice. i'll be refinishing my dull headlights using another elantraxd diy. but, i am working on thanksgiving. no biggie. maybe my sister will bring me a plate for supper. then i'm taking my son to nyc, courtesy of shg activities committee, as an early christmas gift that same weekend.

happy veteran's day.

happy thanksgiving.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202299166901690059.post-11163000616837735602009-10-13T19:21:00.008-04:002009-10-13T19:33:26.122-04:00the diamond in the windowi read it when i was, oh, 9. 10, maybe. it's ingrained on my soul. and it's the perfect movie - adventure, thriller, mystery, love, fantasy...okay. no angst. but, i'm telling you, it's a movie worth making. tom hanks would love this to be a movie. i just know he would.

after my third purchase of this book, i emailed toni morrison, asking her to submit the author, jane langton, as a nobel candidate. i also asked ms morrison to tell oprah that this book should be a movie. good lord, that must have been ten some years ago. then i saw 'bend it like beckham' and, you guessed it, i sent the writer/director, gurinder chadha, a request to do this movie. not sure, but i think i also sent a request to mira nair. read the book and you'll learn why i did that. or not. read the book.

if you, dear blog reader, can produce this movie, then the hook is as follows: ~the dream is the reality.~ animation until the end, when... read the book! from the very beginning, all animation must be illustrated as in the original book (erik blegvad). maybe with just a touch of color and shadow. to feel like you're watching the book come to life, but still two-dimensional. then, when edward and eleanor fall asleep - boom! - everything is all twinkly and three-dimensional. sorta like pixar. maybe real with a touch of sparkle, even. oh! and the time frame is mid-summer through autumn for the best fall foliage, then into early winter for a great 'christmas' movie. in concord, of course!

and you need to choose actors/kids that know fear and can sweat after hard work. you know. like we saw in 'stand by me'. might be hard to find skinny red-headed, freckle-faced kids, but they're out there.

and i want to be in the first test screening audience.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0
